Sun and sea

Axarquia borders the Costa del Sol. So you can choose between well-known beaches such as Torrox, Nerja, Torre Del Mar and unknown beaches and small bays. The beach is a 25-minute drive from the house. After a day at the beach you can enjoy beautiful sunsets and food and drinks in the numerous beach bars. While you are there you can also enjoy a trip with a catamaran at sea and spot dolphins.

Food and drink

From classic Spanish stone oven dishes to contemporary variations on Spanish favourites. There is something for everyone. Eating paella and fish dishes in a beach bar in December, or calamari, goat and roasted aubergine in the mountains. It is possible. And all at super affordable prices. Where else can you drink a gin and tonic for 5 euros? It still exists 500 metres from our house.

Charming towns nearby

Axarquia consists of 31 villages, each with its own charm and special dishes. Some villages can be reached on foot, others by bike or car. The region has 5 car routes that cross the region. Our holiday home is located along the oil and mountain route (La Ruta del Aceita y la Montaña). This is 62.5 kilometers long and runs completely inland through mountainous terrain in the north-west of Axarquia.

Bike on vespa

Whether you still want to pedal, drive electrically or brave the mountains with a Vespa, beautiful views are included for free. The “ruta de bici pueblo blancos” starts from Velez-Malaga. This beautiful cycling route through white villages offers something for everyone and ends at the sea. With the necessary stops in the mountains at the miradors and some tapas along the way, you can count on a day of cycling.

Walking and hiking

The Boquete de Zaffarya walk starts at the natural border between the provinces of Malaga and Granada. Various routes for sporty and less experienced hikers start from the car park. Close to Alcaucin on the Sierra Tejada Ruta Botanica. Close to the village of Vinuela is Lake Vinuela. The entire hike around the lake is 25 kilometres long and takes an average of 6 hours. Other adventurous walks near El Chorro, El Torcal, Nerja, Coin and Canillas de Aceituno.

Historical art cities

Granada, Ronda and Cordoba are worth a visit. Whether you start or end your trip with a visit to these beautiful cities, you will be immersed in splendor, history, folklore, gastronomy and culture. We often advise our guests to book a night on site so that you have time to enjoy what these cities have to offer.

Shopping

Shopping can be combined with the historical art cities. But you can of course also go to the nearby shopping centre in Velez-Malaga or a little further in Malaga. Furthermore, there are also weekly markets organised in the region. Supermarkets, bakery, fruit shop and butcher can be found in Puente don Manuel, Periana and Vinuela. The larger supermarkets such as Mercadona, Eroski, Lidl, ... in Velez-Malaga. Most shops are open until 21:00 to 22:00.

Adventure

There is no shortage of adventure: skiing in the Sierra Nevada in winter, ziplining, buggy tours, via ferrata and the caminito del rey.

On and in the sea

Diving, snorkeling, canyoning, kite surfing, kayaking and much more. There are also half day trips or day trips with catamaran. For those who want to sail faster, there is a speedboat cruise on the sea.

You don't even have to drive to the sea to go kayaking, you can do that on Lake Vinuela. People without sea legs can just watch from the beach.

There is so much to discover in the area. This asks for more. It was a beautiful combination of discovering and slowing down in the mountains. We spent the last night in Granada. A beautiful ending to a wonderful trip.
